Event Overview: Light in the Dark Fest is an (indie) folk, electronic, rock, pop, hip- hop, visual art, film, dance, and creative writing *wake up and live non-extinction level event. Stay Human!
Mission Statement: We are working to unite DIY artists, Indie artists, and enthusiasts through an online summer art festival. It seeks to find the sweet spot between art that embraces the heart and soul of our humanity, grapples with and works to improve the current modern debacles of our civilization, alongside the glittering wonders of modern technology and creativity at its finest.
Art for Direct Activism Statement: Light in the Dark has created an online platform for art as a direct portal for activism. This is an effort to not only help to lower the spread of the global pandemic, but also strives to eradicate the sick societal injustices that have always plagued every institutional foundation of our world and nation. We are outraged by the complex interwoven structural injustices that run deep within America and the globalized world. This includes racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, eurocentrism, ethnocentrism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, ageism, environmental injustice, the list goes on... and the complex interlocked intersections of them within the criminal justice system, the educational system, healthcare, the mass media, the economy/private sector, government/public sector, and every institutional foundation.
Included within this is the ills of a global market where the wealthy exploit the dependent. This includes all people who are lower income earners and disproportionately lower income people of color. Additionally, lower income people of color have been disproportionately killed by the pandemic. We have an economy originally built on slavery that was NEVER FIXED, a New Jim Crow system including for profit prisons, and corporations that all too often value profit over people's current and future well-being and safety.
Always and especially now during the pandemic American and global essential workers within the private and public sector work day and night to keep us alive and well. Included within this are the food workers who provide us (or rather those who can afford to buy food) with one of our very most basic needs- food to eat. Yet these essential food workers remain an under-advocated for part of the workforce who face the ongoing threat of danger and exploitation.
The first Light in the Dark Fest was a fundraiser festival for Food Chain Workers Alliance. While the festival on August 15th was a free event, if you like what you see, hear, and feel we hope you will donate to FCWA and we truly believe you can help save the world from its destruction. By donating to Food Chain Workers Alliance our goal is to be able to help keep both food workers and the general public safer, improve working conditions, and help prevent them and those they serve from getting sick, as we tackle structural injustice from one of its root sources.
Support the Arts Statement: We also believe that art in itself is a humanizing and elevating force that allows creators and receivers to harness their own personal grit and strength, critique and reform society, and expand their heart, soul, and mind. Art brings people together in a way that transcends space and time. How did Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell’s lyrics give power to the zeitgeist of the hippie movement? How does Bob Marley’s message of “One Love” impact fans across the world even today? However, for years now even some of the biggest indie bands can't even afford health insurance and can barely pay the rent of a small apartment long before the pandemic took the little they had. Therefore, Light in the Dark Fest supports the arts by offering cash prizes for some of the art contest winners and also hoping you will donate to the artists (who will have a paypal tip jar) for all their hard work on the day of the festival.
*Additional Clarifying Statement: by a non-extinction level event we mean we will persevere, thrive, and overcome the same old and new manifestations of dehumanization and injustice in modern day society since Christopher Columbus and before we can even begin to understand. As Bob Dylan said, “It's gettin' dark, too dark to see.” and Martin Luther King Jr. warned us, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” and in the words of Jim Morrison, “The time to hesitate is through.” And Bob Marley tried to bring it all home, “As it's been said already, let it be done, I tell you who we are under the sun.”
