Overview & Mission Statements
Event Overview: Light in the Dark Fest Winter 2020 is an online music, visual art, and performing arts fundraiser festival for Save Our Stages
Mission Statement: We are working to unite artists and enthusiasts through a winter holiday art festival. It seeks to find the sweet spot between art that embraces the heart and soul of our humanity, grapples with and works to improve the current modern debacles of our civilization, alongside the glittering wonders of modern technology & creativity.
Art for Direct Activism Statement: Light in the Dark has created an online platform for art as a direct portal for activism. This is an effort to not only help to lower the spread of the global pandemic, that at the time of writing this has already cost the lives of approximately 1.32 million, but also strives to eradicate the sick societal injustices that have always plagued every institutional foundation of the world and nation. We are outraged by the complex interwoven structural injustices that run deep within America and the globalized world. This includes racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, eurocentrism, ethnocentrism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, ageism, environmental injustice, the list goes on... and the complex interlocked intersections of them within the criminal justice system, the educational system, healthcare, the mass media, the economy/private sector, government/public sector, and every institutional foundation.
Included within this is the ills of a global market where the wealthy exploit the dependent. This includes lower income earners and disproportionately lower income people of color. Additionally, lower income people of color have been disproportionately killed by the pandemic. We have an economy originally built on slavery that was NEVER FIXED and has always manifested the most macabre forms of violence and brutality against people of color, a New Jim Crow system including for profit prisons, and corporations that all too often value profit over people and the planet's current and future well-being and safety.
Support the Arts Statement: We believe that art in itself is a humanizing and elevating force that allows creators and receivers to harness their own personal grit and strength, critique and reform society, and expand their heart, soul, and mind. Art brings people together in a way that transcends space and time. How did Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell’s lyrics give power to the zeitgeist of the hippie movement? How does Bob Marley’s message of “One Love” impact fans across the world even today? However, for years now even some of the biggest indie bands can't even afford health insurance and can barely pay the rent of a small apartment long before the pandemic took the little they had.
Support the Arts During the Pandemic Statement: During the pandemic artists are working hard to help us psychologically, spiritually, physically (giving us the music to exercise to and stay well), and sociologically- to empower us with their messages to reform society. Additionally, musicians, artists, venue owners + employees are struggling more than ever to stay afloat during this time in history. However, the arts are all too often viewed as just "entertainment" and extras and are the first thing that are cut, such as was evident with the NCLB policy initiative and is further reflected in spending and consumption patterns. This includes an abundance of stores and restaurants and a relatively small amount of art venues and lack of people who want to pay for art. The arts not only inspires and helps the individual but can change the entire cultural milieu. Therefore, Light in the Dark II has decided to be a fundraiser for Save Our Stages. This is to generate funds to support vital small music venues. Additionally, it aims to provide much needed donations for our dedicated artists themselves (which is equally important, especially during a pandemic that has wiped all too many out financially). While the event on December 19th will be a free event, we hope you will support the arts and donate on that day of the festival to both Save Our Stages and to the artists themselves (who will have a paypal tip jar) for all their noble work.
